Consumer Alert: Got Debt? Want a Business? Beware.
By Jim Daniels
I've been hearing from more and more unfortunate victims of
scams the last few months. Today I want to share a couple of
shady tactics with you
in hopes of keeping even just one BizWeb eGazette subscriber
from falling prey.
First a quick message from today's top sponsor (this one is a
long-time, trusted advertiser, so take a look at their great
offer...)
Beginner's
Guide to Making Money With How-To DVDs!
Earn MONEY in your Spare Time offering your easy to create
DVD online with or without a website.
(There are high traffic sites looking for DVDs just like
yours to sell!)
This first one really makes me sick. And there are countless
companies raking it in with this scheme, due to the current
economic conditions.
Is Debt Settlement a Scam?
With millions of people out of work, it's
understandable that many folks need help managing their debt. If you
find yourself with more debt than you can handle, be VERY
careful who you turn to for help.
Be particularly careful when considering "debt
settlement". In fact, promise me you'll watch this video
before you contact any debt related companies, whether you
find them on the web, through a mailed offer or even advertised
on radio or television.
(This video explains how many "debt help" companies make big bucks at your expense.)
I hope this video opened your eyes to what's going in the
consumer debt space. And this is just ONE example of how you can
be taken advantage of.
Another I became aware of this week is a national radio spot
offering a free CD promising to wipe out your debt. All you pay
is the shipping. But instead of help, unsuspecting consumers
have been getting long sales pitches over the phone for 'debt
coaching services'. Some have even reported finding new charges
on their credit cards for thousands of dollars!
It's a jungle out there folks. Don't get involved with any
"debt solution" company unless you fully investigate
them with the BBB,
with ripoffreport.com and with your local attorney generals
office.
A better strategy altogether, is this... instead of trusting
an unknown company to handle your debts, no matter how
complicated they may seem, try to handle the situation yourself.
If you're not sure where to start, you can start by
contacting creditors directly and explaining the situation. Or,
if you're not comfortable with that, simply contact the National
Foundation for Credit Counseling at
http://nfcc.org. Their network of Certified Consumer Credit
Counselors work with you to offer real solutions to your debt
problems.

OK, just one more warning
today. This one has to do with Internet Business.
I've recently begun
web business coaching and one alarming
trend I've been hearing is the amount
of money people have "invested" in past opportunities
or coaching.
How Much Is Too Much to Start
an Internet Business?
This past week I've had more than
one client report spending upwards of $10,000 to have a website
set up for them. These people were coerced after lengthy
telephone "consultations" to split up the cost onto two or three
credit cards.
After months of waiting they have
nothing to show for it.
Folks, unless you are doing a
business on a large scale and you have a minimum of six figures
available to invest, you should NEVER, and I mean never
slap $10k on a credit card for a website. Even if the sales
person tells you it's a "turnkey" operation that you'll start
profiting from right away. That's just too much to lay out
unless you have serious capital or investors backing you!
Another poor lady invested $2,800
for business coaching services and after three phone sessions
she realized the coach knew less that she did. When she tried to
cancel, she got the runaround and had to pay a 15% restocking
fee! (Restocking? How to you restock bad advice?)
I guess the point I'm trying to
make is this...
Anything more than you can afford
is TOO MUCH to spend on an Internet business. Sure, you may
want to risk a hundred bucks or maybe even a few hundred. But
when you get into the thousands, you have to be very careful,
especially if you can't pay off that credit card bill in full
when it arrives.
Web business is supposed to be
inexpensive. And trust me, it is! What it really takes is time
and dedication, NOT a lot of money. Don't let others convince
you that their high priced solution is a short cut.

"Jim, I just wanted to say I got a great response from the ad
that I ran with you recently. I made over 5x the cost of the ad
so I'm very happy. I'd become a little disheartened with a lot
of ezine/newsletter advertising recently so just wanted to say
"thanks" and I'll definitely be back!" -- Richard Legg, BizWeb
