More Subscriber Q&A's... (Which One Applies To You?)

In last week's issue I shared an email from yet another BizWeb eGazette subscriber who's making money online. He wrote to thank me for helping to make it happen, and I shared some tips to help him increase his home-based income even further.

That Q&A format brought lots of positive feedback and more requests for help. So today's issue is more of the same -- emails from three readers looking for help, along with my recommendations. Here's hoping you find a tip or two you can use...

Hi Jim,

I have been getting your Bizweb Gazette over a year and a half. I read the articles that I believe pertain to me. The main thing I have struggled with most of the information out on internet marketing seems to be directed to people/sites that sell info products or services. None really address consumer products like mine. I am a small manufacturer of table linens with an online store.

I have purchased many online marketing products and subscriptions to newsletters, to find most do not address my type of product. Is there anything out there that helps people like me build their business on-line (I don’t have a brick & mortar store) without paying a fortune in pay-per-click advertising?

My website has been live since February and I am getting very little traffic. . . only from my email list of friends, family and acquaintances.

I would really love some advice. I am running out of money to do much more with the business. I don’t want to shut it down after all the work I have put into it.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Hi Cindy,

Jim Daniels here. Thanks so much for writing. It's always nice to hear from long time subscribers.

I read your email and understand your frustration. Lots of folks run into the same problem you are facing -- lack of traffic and sales. I think I can help.

I just spent some time at your site and let me first say it is fantastic! Well laid out and very professional. And your prices in my opinion are if anything, too low! But before you go changing them, let's get a traffic plan together.

You mentioned that PPC is too pricey for you at this stage. While you should not rule it out especially as profits rise, you can hold off on that for now. Normally I tell folks on a tight marketing budget to start writing articles about their area of expertise or their site topic. Yours is a little tricky for that. I'm sure there are lots of people who will buy your great linens... but, well... getting people to read articles about linens might be a really hard sell!

So in my eyes, your best traffic source would be to get people who are searching for linens to your site. The first solution that came to mind is
StomperNet... have you tried that yet Cindy? It has really helped a lot of people in your situation and it works great with consumer product sites.

Cindy, your site is VERY well done and I really think you can make a go of it. And focusing on organic search traffic may be your best bet. The traffic is free and if very high quality.

Also, along with that program I think you should consider adding some niche-specific offerings at your site. Along the lines of your customized products. You could offer custom party/shower/wedding/ linens, etc. for special occasions. Doing this would help you generate more traffic via organic seo as they show you in
StomperNet.

Jim,

What is the best way to promote an affiliate site, where all I need to do is to get people to it?

This is the site...

Of course I have no control over what the site looks like, so should I do a safelist or other type of campaign?

What resources can you recommend?

Hi Ed,

That's a tough one. One big problem is that the whole idea of "water for gas" sounds too good to possibly be true. And that will keep a lot of people from

But between you and I Ed, I KNOW it is works. That's because my brother-in-law is doing it. This summer he pulled up to my vacation cottage in Maine in his old Toyota and I asked him how many MPG he got? When he told me "about 50MPG" I made him show me how.

He popped the hood and showed me the small bottle of water with an electrolysis unit and a few wires coming out of it. He said "it makes hydrogen and boosts my MPG by 35%." I was impressed to say the least and wondered why everyone wasn't doing it!

Anyway, I digress. My point is this... I know your information is real but convincing others may be your biggest hurdle. With that in mind, I would promote the site with ezine ads (email newsletter ads) like this...

Water For Gas? Give Me a Break.
You don't really believe that's possible, do you?
(Neither did I until I SAW how easy it was.)
See It For Yourself At: http://water75.com

Ed, I would start advertising in ezines that focus on "green" topics as well as money-saving / frugal / coupon / thrifty newsletters. That's where your best target audience would be. (Ezines will usually outperform safelists by a wide margin.)

You can find those ezines by using the keyword search tool at the top of bestezines.com or ezinehub.com. (There are other ezine directories on the web as well.)

Ezine ads are a very inexpensive way to promote a product or service. In fact, I practically built my business via ezines, so I know they work.

Or, if your budget does not permit paying for ads, start writing some articles about this water for gas topic and submit them to those same newsletters. In addition, read this special issue of the BizWeb eGazette on article marketing...

I hope this helps you get started in the right direction.

Hi Jim,

I'm brand new to Internet marketing and have nothing in place. I don't even know what needs to be in place. I need a course to tell me the specifics of how to build an Internet business. The course needs to tell me what to do with detailed specifics of how to do it. Does your course do that? If your answer is yes, I'll get started right away. I can't wait to get started. I'm very determined to build my own business but I have no idea of how to go about it.

A big plus to me is that you will work personally with your clients when needed. In all the research I have done, no one mentions that, so I'm sure they won't do it.

I look forward so much to hearing from you!

Thanks,

Hi there Phil, thanks for writing.

Starting from scratch can definitely seem overwhelming. And I'll be frank with you. Although it is not the easiest way to succeed online, the best LASTING business model is to come up with a product or service of your own.

(While affiliate marketing can and does work, and it is sometimes a good way to get your feet wet, you really need to at least think of what niche you would be comfortable in if you were to eventually create something of you own.)

Let me ask you this... is there knowledge you have gained over the years that might be valuable to a niche market? Dig deep and think of all your past experiences and knowledge. You may have an information product or private site in you without even knowing it! Heck, one of my clients developed a video on salsa dancing and sold 180 before it was even completed! That's just an off the wall real example.

Maybe your work related experiences can pay off... or perhaps it is something in the way of your hobbies or interests that you can help people with. As you consider ideas, do some research. The first step is to make sure there is a niche market for a product or idea you are considering. Here's a research technique I use, which should work well for you too...

Start your research using this keyword suggestion tool...
http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/

At that page, enter a keyword relating to the ideas you have in mind. Think along the lines of what your target market may be searching for. The tool will show you the number of times that keyword was searched on at the major search engines. This will give you an indication of what your niche market(s) bear for interest.

If you find a decent amount of interest, say a few hundred or more combined daily searches on keywords directly related to what you want to promote, then you may be in a solid niche. Keep a file of the results of your keyword research.

As to your request for a course that walks you through each step of setting up your new business, I have a software program that I built specifically for that purpose...

You'll find it at www.ezWebBusinessBuilder.com - (or just search google for "build a web business" and you'll see it listed first among some 17 million sites.) Thousands of people have already used the software to build their web businesses Phil, and you'll see some of their comments at the site.

"Jim, I just wanted to say I got a great response from the ad that I ran with you recently. I made over 5x the cost of the ad so I'm very happy. I'd become a little disheartened with a lot of ezine/newsletter advertising recently so just wanted to say "thanks" and I'll definitely be back!" -- Richard Legg, BizWeb eGazette Advertiser
