"The First Sentence At Your Website"

Today's issue is the first in a short series on writing sales copy for the web. Today I want to talk about the first sentence your visitors see at your site -- your headline.

There are some secret headline tactics that experts use, to get visitors to stick around at their sites. Today I'll share them with you.

Without a great headline, your site will lose a huge percentage of visitors within seconds of arrival. Can you really afford that?

If you want more people to stick around at your site and maybe even BUY SOMETHING, you need to first consider carefully what your visitors are looking for.

That's right, forget what product or service you are selling and focus on what END RESULT your visitors desire! Once you've determined that, you can compose a winning benefit-rich headline that will entice your audience.

For example, of you're selling a business opportunity, you'd want to focus on all the personal and financial freedom your opportunity could bring them.

Once you know the desires of your audience, you simply need to express those desires in a proven headline format that captures their attention. I've used each of the following five formats with great success online...

1. How to Headline

By starting your headline with “how to” your prospects will be enticed by seeing their problem and a proposed solution immediately upon landing at your site. This can be a powerful motivator and get many people reading through the rest of your copy. For example: How to Avoid Divorce and Win Back Your Spouse No Matter How Big Your Problems Seem...

2. Testimonial Headline

This type of headline utilizes testimonials of your customers for the headline. Your customers will sell for you since they will be talking of the benefits they gain from your products. For Example: "I Tried Every Bad Breath Cure On The Market And This Is The First One That Finally Let's Me Get Close To People..."

3. Guarantee Headline

If your product or service comes with a powerful guarantee, let your would-be customers know it by showing it on your headline. For example: "Your Dog Barking Problem Will Be Solved In One Week, Easily And Humanely Or You Don't Pay One Dime!

4. Question Headline

If you know exactly why your visitors came to your site, and it is usually for one reason only, this type of headline can be very effective. Just be sure to ask the correct question that will fit perfectly with your visitors. For example: Are Your Starting To Think You Might Never Find That Someone Special To Share Your Life With?

5. It's Not Your Fault Headline

This is a popular strategy used in infomercials. It basically lets the prospect off the hook and gives them a reason for their past failures, and a new solution. Example: "It's Not Your Fault You Can't Lose Weight -- You've Been Lied To For Years About The REAL Reason Why 90% of Dieters Fail Over and Over..."

More Headline Writing Secrets...

When writing your headline, try to move beyond the usual and remember to appeal to at least one of these five basic emotions that drive sales both online and off...

Passion, Greed, Envy, Pride and Fear

You don't have to hit them over the head with it or sensationalize your headline. Instead, identify which one or two of those emotions might be motivating your visitors and consider appealing to them in your headline. Do it subtly, but do it.

Here's one last example with that advice in mind...

Let's say you're selling debt solutions. Most people visiting your site would be worried about their growing debt. Obviously they would have some level of fear about their growing problem. You would want to address that fear in a comforting manner, so that they know you care and want to help.

A headline like this could work well, combining a few of the formats from today's newsletter...

Example: "Are You Concerned About Your Growing Debts? Consider Using The Following Legitimate Solution That Has Helped Thousands of People Avoid Bankruptcy..."

As you can see, you do not have to be sneaky, underhanded or and over-the-top hypester to write an effective headline. You simply need to know your audience, their fears and desires, and appeal to them with a proven format.

In fact, keep that above paragraph in mind when writing your entire sales letter and you'll craft something that gets great results.

"Jim, I just wanted to say I got a great response from the ad that I ran with you recently. I made over 5x the cost of the ad so I'm very happy. I'd become a little disheartened with a lot of ezine/newsletter advertising recently so just wanted to say "thanks" and I'll definitely be back!" -- Richard Legg, BizWeb eGazette Advertiser
